Within the framework of the organic chemistry courses the department offers (CHEM 272, 273 and the labs CHEM 272L, 273L), the Student Learning Outcomes are:
to make the students knowledgeable about the fundamentals of carbon chemistry,
to understand the consequences (reactivity, properties) of the three-dimensionality of molecules,
to be able to interpret patterns of reactivity on the basis of mechanistic reasoning,
to be able to design syntheses of organic molecules of moderate complexity, and
to be able to deduce molecular structures from spectroscopic data.
